FAT TALE, written and illustrated by Karen Land, is a picture book that will help children focus on good nutrition. Not long ago, a chubby child meant a healthy child. Today, obesity is our nation’s fastest growing health problem. Our children are experiencing a nationwide epidemic of poor eating habits. The good news is for the most part, obesity is preventable. Planting the seeds of good nutrition at an early age is a fundamental preventative measure. Fat Tale is … More >>

This is a wonderfully written and illustrated treatment of a serious topic. We all agree that our kids are eating too much junk food. This engaging little story goes to the heart of the problem, in a way that children can relate to.

Fat Tale is a creative story about an innocent frog who is led astray by well-meaning children. Willy and Shauna like to feed Froggie high-sugar, fat-laden foods, but are empathetic and remorseful when the frog becomes overweight and unhealthy because he adopts an unhealthful diet. Fat Tale’s message is a timely one. Our children need to learn early about the dangers of these kinds of foods. They need to be made aware of how advertising aims to corrupt their healthful lifestyles and lead them astray, just as Willy and Shauna did with Froggie. My children really enjoyed this book, and it gave me several opportunities to explain how the decisions we make shape our lives.

One only has to spend ten seconds in a school lunch room to realize what
kids are eating. They throw away their sandwiches and start on the cakes, cookies and candy in their lunch packs. I read Fat Tale to my readers and they loved it. They were worried about what would happen to Gorf consuming so much junk food. Gorf is an adorable frog who almost eats to his demise as winter approaches. My readers also enjoyed the illustrations and expressions Gorf displayed. Definately an engaging way to learn about good healty choices.

I enjoyed reading this book aloud to school library classes and the students liked it too. FAT TALE is a funny book about a serious issue. Eating too much junk food. A boy and a girl addicted to sugary snacks discover a little frog who seems to dislike gnats and dragonflies. So they toss him some French fries and he “gorfs” them down. Soon the three of them are overindulging in junk food. The kids name the frog Gorf because of the sound he makes when eating. Even after Jim, Shauna’s big brother admonishes them for eating too much and feeding Gorf junk food, the kids and the frog continue to stuff themselves. But when Gorf is too fat to dive to the bottom of the pond to hibernate (fat floats) all three change their eating habits and choose healthy foods. After the read alouds, we engaged in a discussion about eating better more healthy snacks
